Geography Migrant Sea Slaves
a. Is there hope for these migrant “Sea Slaves”?
There is a hope for these migrant sea slaves. However, without necessary actions by the government and international bodies, it will be tough to control this situation. People end up becoming sea slaves when they search for jobs and opportunity for livelihood and get duped by traffickers. In some cases, kidnappings take place in order to have people on board who can assist in fishing. The reason it has grown to a huge extent is due to the greed of everyone who is associated with it. In fact, there are international corporations who are direct purchasers of fished items from the suppliers using sea slaves (Urbina, 2015). They are willing involved in this problem because they are generating income through it. In USA, there is huge demand of cat and dog food that are manufactured directly from the supplies received from the fisherman using sea slaves. Even local authorities have been found to be deeply involved in this dirt. Until few strong and honest organizations do not come forward to crack down on this trafficking, it is unlikely to bring hope for these migrants.
b. Do you think there is anything consumers in the USA can do to mitigate this problem?
- Is it really a small world?
Of course consumers in USA can certainly do a lot to mitigate this problem. Migrants are being pushed into this activity because the fish is hugely demanded by the USA customers. If the USA customers get aware of the atrocities being casted on the poor migrants, and they take oath not to purchase items that generates from there, it can be resolved. Technology has certainly made this world quite small.
