During mitosis, a single diploid cell undergoes division to form two homologous diploid cells. The number of chromosomes stays the same and all daughter cells are exact copies of a parental cell.
During meiosis, a diploid cell undergoes two divisions to yield four haploid cells with half the number of chromosomes. In their turn, the daughter cells are differently marked genetically with respect to each other and from that of parent cell by crossing over and independent assortment .
Consequently, the main difference is that mitosis preserves chromosome number in order to produce identical daughter cells and meiosis decreases it by producing genetically differentiated daughters. Meiosis creates genetic diversity, but mitosis does not. Daughter cells that are distinctly produced only occurs during the process of meiosis and not mitosis.
