What Did Dan Cody Do for Gatsby? What Did Gatsby Learn from Him?
Answer
Daniel Cody was a rich man that hired Jay Gatsby (at the time, James Gatz) as a crew member of his yacht when Gatsby was still young. Cody was a mentor and also father figure to Gatsby – he brought him up and introduced him to the world of the rich. Cody was the source of Gatsby having his first tasted on wealth and status which he would later make his mission. Cody demonstrated to Gatsby what opportunities could present themselves with money and boosted Gatsby’s drive. The death of Cody meant that Gatsby left with $25,000 as a sort of capital which he used to build his fortune. From his mentor he got the lesson that wealth is a value, what does it means, and the model of an ambitious self-made man. This determined his life.
