Which of the following occurs during interphase?

A. Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

B. DNA replicates

C. Chromosomes pull away from the equator of the cell

D. Chromosomes become visible

Answer: B. DNA replicates

When the cell is in the interphase stage, which is the longest part of the cell cycle, continuous DNA replication takes place. Interphase is divided into three sub phases: Stage 1, 2, and 3 of gap 1 (G1). During the S phase the chromosome DNA molecules of the cell nucleus are copied with a high accuracy via a DNA replication process. This phenomenon guarantees that both the new cells get exactly the same two strands of DNA from the initial cell. The other events like chromosomes getting aligned, are not visible, or spindle fibres forming and the migration of chromosomes toward the equator are all part of the processes of mitosis or meiosis, but not of interphase. The precise reproduction of DNA during interphase is imperative as it determines the proper fragmentation of the genetic information that will be distributed to the daughter cells at the cell division.
