Each of the levels of government has some unique authorities though the powers and authority are largely centralized at the federal level. The rights that are vested in the federal government are termed as the stated or enumerated powers such as regulating interstate commerce, declaring war, and coining money. On the other hand, States have residual powers which means that any powers not specifically excluded enable States to administer affairs in their regions. But in regards to differences this is when the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution now gives the federal government the edge over the laws of the state. This structure of power-sharing as well as separated federal powers with the federal level having increased authority makes up the American federal system.
