What do you call a symbol that represents a speech sound?

Question:- What do you call a symbol that represents a speech sound?

Answer: A phoneme is one of the smallest units of the sound in a language which makes two different words in the language. This may be defined as a rudimentary concept in phonology, which is the study of the sound of languages. Phonemes are usually written out in symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) which is an alphabetic script for the phonetic transcription of spoken languages. For example, in English, the word “cat” consists of three phonemes: Three new phonemes introduced were /k/, /æ/, and /t/. Phonemes are ‘bigger’ sounds that are capable of variation depending on context or speaker yet the phonemes are independent and useful in the differentiation of words. Phonemes are very important for both linguistic analysis and teaching of languages and many other uses like speech recognition systems and speech synthesis systems.
