Each of the following is a function of the liver EXCEPT:

a. storage of glycogen and iron reserves.

b. antibody production.

c. inactivation of toxins and medications.

d. synthesis of plasma proteins such as album.

e. production and secretion of bile.

Answer: b. antibody production.

It is important to note that while the liver has a myriad of critical roles in the body, the production of antibodies is not one of them. Hence, they form part of the immune system particularly the B lymphocytes triggering the formation of antibodies. The liver involves itself in the areas of glycogen and iron storage, breaking of toxic substances, plasma protein synthesis such as albumin, and bile formation. However, the liver does indeed have some involvement with the immune system, for example, it produces complement proteins and it filters pathogens, however, it does not produce antibodies. This function is accomplished by the lymphatic system of the body consisting of the lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow where B cells develop and release antibodies regarding antigens.
