Electromagnetic waves possess three fundamental properties: they are; Speed: the rate at which the wave moves through a particular medium. Wavelength: also known as wave length is the distance between two consecutive corresponding points of the succeeding phase of a wave cycle. Frequency is the number of wave oscillations made per unit time. These are attributes of these waves and determine the behaviour and nature of these waves.

First of all, as with all forms of electromagnetic waves, these waves move with the velocity of light in a vacuum, which is equal to approximately 3 * 10^8 ms⁻¹. This speed remains as a constant factor and is considered to be the ultimate speed as far as the universe is concerned.

Secondly, wavelength specifically means the distance between two consecutive points that are of the same phase, be it a crest or trough of the wave. The two events are inversely related to each other, for high frequencies are found to correspond to short wavelengths and vice versa.

Last of all, frequency refers to the number of cycles that occur in one unit of time at a definite point. It is expressed in Hertz (Hz) and defines the energy of the wave that travels through the media; the higher frequencies correspond to higher energy.
