At the incident scene, who handles media inquiries?
A. Communications Officer
B. Public Information Officer
C. Media Relations Specialist
D. Liaison Officer
Answer: B. Public Information Officer
The role of the Public Information Officer is also vital in the whole process of incident management because he/she has the main responsibility to coordinate with the media officers at the scene of the incident. This position involves collecting and confirming information about the incident in question due to the need to report accurate information to the press and the public. The PIO liaises with the Incident Commander in pre-arranging that a maximum of the released information fits the general incident management plan. They also follow media coverage, conduct handlings for press conferences and manage cooperation with other agencies linked with the case. This helps incumbent Management teams keep a checkhouse on media communications through the PIO to prevent the dissemination of conflicting information during emergencies.
