Question:- How many states are there in the United Kingdom?

Answer: It is one state.

The United Kingdom which comprises of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is one country. The UK comprises of four countries including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland; it is important to note they are not individual nations at the international level. They are almost like provinces or districts within the overall state or country of United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has a unitary system of government with a central government located in London dealing with aspects like the foreign policy, defense as well as the macroeconomic policies of the nation. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their legislatures and to some extent are semi-autonomous in terms of some domestic affairs but they do not form separate sovereign states but are a part of UK. Thus, it has the features of a unitary state along with the features of a federation, but in essence, the UK acts as one state in the international arena.
