A battery holds chemical energy that is changed into electrical energy when the battery is employed. In the battery, there is an anode and a cathode which are two electrical terminals with electrolytes in between. When the battery is connected to a circuit, then chemical reactions at the electrodes cause the circulation of electrons resulting in electric current. These reactions include the motion of ions from the electrodes across the layer of the electrolyte. The chemical energy that has been stored in the battery gradually turns into electrical energy when the battery is being used. When rechargeable batteries are recharged, electricity is turned back into the chemical form that helps the battery regain power. The storage capability of energy in the forms of chemical compounds and the conversion of the same to electrical energy, when needed, makes batteries critical in the powering of several portable devices and also in energy storage usages.
