A slogan is a shortened and easily remembered phrase that has a clearly defined function of stating the objective, the role, or the character of a group organization, or political party. As it is a means of expressing key values, objectives, or principles, the message appeals to the intended audience to develop an unforgettable image.

There is a rather broad application of slogans of different orientations of society, politics, advertisements, social initiatives, and company identification. They are to be persuasive, easily memorable and evoke emotions; this is because they incorporate devices such as onomatopoeia, assonance, or rhyme. In political campaigns, slogans may contain a candidate’s main principle or his vision for the country. For instance, Barack Obama the 2008 U. S. president election used “Yes We Can” as his campaign slogan as a way of championing change and hope and Donald Trump in the 2016 U. S. presidential election used the slogan “Make America Great Again,” as a way of appealing to the people’s patriotism and yearning to have a better country.

In corporate communication, slogans are highly important in presenting the company’s face to the public. Nike’s “Just Do It” initiates militant assertiveness and perseverance consistent with Nike’s identity of performance athletic wear. McDonald’s uses a jingle in their campaign “I’m Lovin’ It” which depicts initial satisfaction and hence a feeling that the products offered are good. Slogans are also used by movements, for instance, the civil rights movement had the slogan ‘We Shall Overcome’ while the environmental movement adopted the ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ slogan.

As a form of shortcut to convey the goal of a particular group or a party, slogans are related to mottos, taglines and mantras, but have different purposes, and are created to appeal to the supporters. They are summary statements of ideas that are complicated but have the potential to inspire a call to action and unity in people’s identity making it an important component of aspects such as communication and influence in different areas of specialization.
