The US government started a large secret project that was named The Manhattan Project during World War II and this project had employed huge number of people at different sites in the United States. The Manhattan Project had employed around 130,000 people at the peak time and had cost around 2 billion Dollars that can be considered as equivalent to around 27 billion Dollars in 2023.
