Answer: B. No, the Germans continued fighting and attempted offensive measures.

All in all, it was possible to liberate Europe from the claws of the Germans, during and after the D-Day, but the final victory took much more time and rather significant efforts and losses were needed for that. With the D-Day on June 6, 1944, the Allies had given a major strike to the Nazis in Europe, so to say, but the latter did not relinquish their warfare ambitions. The Germans did not surrender easily and were able to put up stiff resistance and at times counter-attacked even after the commencement of D-Day.

The greatest example of these stands is known as the Battle of the Bulge which started in December 1944, that is half a year after D-Day. It was a large-scale attack launched by Germany during the Winter War targeting the Ardennes Forest in Wallonia a region in modern-day Belgium, France and Luxembourg. It was the final gamble of Hitler to divide the forces of the Allies in two halves and it would make Britain and the United States come to the negotiation table for a treaty in the favour of Axis powers. While this attack was not successful, this showed that Germany was willing and could launch large-scale offences. Furthermore, the Germans persisted in the other battle theatres, such as in Italy and against the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front. It will be recalled that the war in Europe only ceased on May 7, 1945, or a full year after D-Day when Germany agreed to an unconditional surrender. This protracted standout means that though D-Day was a masterful strike, it did not turn into a means of extinguishing Germany’s goals, or its capability to continue to fight.
