Temperature is an indicator of the mean kinetic energy that molecules or atoms in a substance possess. Increase in temperature leads to increased kinetic energy of the molecules/atoms and faster movement at more randomized directions. This elevated intermolecular movement results in physical transformations of the substance.

For instance, the molecules of solid ice begin to vibrate more rapidly as they receive kinetic energy on heating. When the melting point temperature is reached which equals 0°C or 32F, these molecular vibrations become so big that they break down the crystalline pattern of ice and cause free movements between molecules which result in melting. A physical change taking place due to an increase in temperature is the melting of ice into water.

Other physical reactions that can be effected by temperature are the boiling point where water vaporizes into a gas when heated at its boiling point. Thus, in conclusion, with the increase of temperature it provides more kinetic energy to molecules that result from enhanced molecular motion and vibrations which may cause physical changes provoked by melting evaporation expansion or modification of crystal structure. The specific temperature at which these different physical transformations take place depends on the substance itself and its characteristics.
