.Ancient English, commonly known as Anglo-Saxon, stemmed from a dialect spoken by Germanic tribes that immigrated to the British Isles from the continent of Europe around 5- 6 century AD. Their language, which was from the West Germanic branch of the Germanic languages family, became the basis of Old English.
