Relic boundaries are borders that no longer exist as international boundaries but still leave a cultural imprint nonetheless. Old international borders may act as new sub-state borders, for example. Other times, economic or social divides may exist on opposite sides of the retired boundary. In some cases, the border may be memorialized as a political symbol.
