The brakes are not used like an on/off switch because:

A. Engine revolutions per minute are affected

B. The brake light will not come on

C. Brake damage could occur

D. The wheels could lock up

Answer: D. The wheels could lock up

Brakes are not to be applied as simple on/off switches; abrupt and uncontrolled braking will cause the wheels to lock up exposing not only the occupants to danger but also the loss of control of the car. When the brakes lock-up, the wheels are then locked, and instead of rotating slowly, they skid out of the control which causes accident.

Locked wheels can make the vehicle slide tragically out of control from which it is impossible to control the movement, thus causing a collision or the vehicle skidding off the road. Along with that, wheel-slip creates a longer stopping distance and makes it harder to drive accordingly to the direction the person intends.

To avoid trims, drivers have to apply brakes softer and with all wheels gently. It will let wheels continue rolling and these wheels will still have good grip on road surface. The system engagement within driver traction controls keeps the vehicle from sliding and decelerates it slowly.
