The 2008 US election was a big moment for women in American politics. Hillary Clinton was the first lady to be most likely picked as a big party’s main choice for president. Sarah Palin also broke records as a Republican running mate for president. She is just the second woman ever to run on an important party’s presidential team.
The vote had a lot of women showing up like never before. Women were 53% of the voters and mostly backed Barack Obama (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., 2024). For the first time, more women than ever were chosen to be in Congress. Nancy Pelosi also became the very first female Speaker of House. Important problems for women like fair pay, right to choose healthcare and time off from work were the focus during these campaigns. The team of Obama focused especially on getting and convincing women to vote.
In general, the important campaigns of Clinton and Palin, more women getting involved in elections as voters or candidates. Also looking at issues that affect them drove 2008 election to be very big for helping women move forward in U.S politics life. It was a big step on the way to equal chance for men and women in our country’s top jobs.
