The interphalangeal joints are condyloid joints, or ellipsoid joints, which are the cartilage-covered joints between the bones of the fingers. Condyloid joints are joints whereby one bone articulates with the elliptical reciprocator on another one by one piece of a bone which is oval. This is a model of movement, in a way that it enables one to go back and forth in addition to the small side-front direction.

At the fingers, the joints of the knuckles (metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints) are the condyloid types, which are comprised of the articular surface being a shallow cavity that is rounded, while the other articular surface is the concave one. This joint is di-arthrodial and is responsible for flexion, extension and adduction/abduction movements needed for grasping and handling the small objects. The condyloid joints of the fingers play a key role in hand motor skills, such as dexterity and flexibility
