Using an octane rated higher than your vehicle______ .

A. gives it more power

B. does not increase power

C. will burn your cylinder heads

D. is safer for the environment

Ans. B. does not increase power

Utilization of fuel with an octane level higher than what is required for your specific automobile won’t boost its driving power or give it a better performance. The octane number assesses a fuel’s capacity to resist the phenomenon of “pre-ignition” or knocking, which can cause irreparable damage to the engine. Today, when cars are equipped with the gasoline engine, they are supposed to run on the regular gasoline with octane number of the fuel equal to 87. Consuming a greater octane gas, be it 87, 89 or 93, in a car that doesn’t require it in no aspect does enhance power or efficiency. With this new octane rating, the fuel can resist the stresses involved in the compression and cylinder pressure without the spark plug sparking early, contrary to a traditional oxygenated fuel. There is no benefit of using higher octane for the automobiles not intended for it and such is considered as offsetting the pockets.
