What are the two types of tectonic plates?

Answer:

There are mainly two categories of tectonic plates: oceanic plates and continental plates.

Tectonic plates refer to the large sections of the lithosphere that can glide on the Asthenosphere- a semi-solid layer beneath. Oceanic plates consist of dense and thin crusts mostly of basalt and exist at the bottom of the world’s oceans. Continental plates, on the other hand, are made of thick, low-density continental crust predominately of granite and have lands. The two kinds of plates are bound to collide with each other along the plate margins, and when they do, they bring about some geological occurrences including; earthquakes, volcanic activities and the formation of mountains. Oceanic plates are comparatively younger and more easily subductible than the continental plates which are comparatively older and lighter. Tectonic plates move; they interact to create what is known as plate tectonics, which forms the face of the earth over millions of years.
