Question:- What is a liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances called?

Answer

A medium that can dissolve other substances and substances that dissolve in it are referred to as solvents. In chemistry, pharmacology and industries in general, solvents are vital in many operations as we will see later.

In the process solvents are capable of dissolving solutes which could be a solid, liquid or a gaseous substance to form homogeneous solutions. Among all the solvents, water is one of the most known and used solvents because of its ability to dissolve diverse substances- both ionic and those with polar bonding. Other examples of the solvents include; Ethanol is a good solvent for the non-polar solutes whereas Acetone and hexane dissolve other organic solvents.

The kind of solvent to be used will depend on characteristics of the solute, the required concentration and purpose of the solution to be prepared.
