Question:- What is the meaning of the term ergogenic aid? What is an ergolytic effect?
Answer
An ergogenic aid refers to any technique, chemical substance or device that improves physical performance and trained work capacity. Some types of ergogenic aids include sports drinks, supplements, steroids and specialized training equipment. These aids enhance endurance, increase power and allow immediate recovery from training. Conversely, ergolytic effects are demonstrated by the opposite effect – a decrease in athletic performance. Ergolytic factors such as dehydration, overtraining and inadequate calorie intake can negatively affect muscle function resulting to fatigue. For as much as ergogenic agents enhance the athletic capacities, an athlete’s performance capability is subtracted through a variable known as ergolytic effects. The appreciation of both concepts enables coaches and trainers to maximize the results of training and competitions.
