What is the relationship between the crust and the lithosphere?

Question:- What is the relationship between the crust and the lithosphere?

Answer: Crust and lithosphere are two different layers of the Earth although they are connected in some ways. The crust is the outermost shell or layer of the earth – solid and made up of lighter elements including continental crust (granite) and oceanic crust (basalt). Each layer is generally not very thick; the thickness varies from 5 km below the oceans to 70 km below the mountains. The lithosphere refers to the combination of the entire crust and a component portion of the mantle, as the word lithosphere translates to “rock sphere.” This rigid layer is also much thicker and it is usually measuring to a depth of about 100-200 km. The lithosphere is further subdivided into tectonic running plates that relocate and collide with each other resulting to availability of earthquakes; volcanic activities as well as formation of mountains. In effect, the crust is the uppermost part of the greater, even though mechanically sturdier, lithosphere.
