Initially, Pettigrew had been living as the Weasleys’ pet rat, Scabbers, and this image was captured on the photograph. This was more than surprising for Sirius because he thought Pettigrew was dead and that he had murdered himself for years prior. The fact that he saw a not-dead Pettigrew triggered Sirius’s escape from Azkaban and led to the events of the third book, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” taking place
