Which of the following best explains how messages are typically transmitted over the internet?

a) Packet Switching

b) Circuit Switching

c) Satellite Transmission

d) Fiber Optic Cables

Answer: a) Packet Switching

Packet switching is the basic technique of transmitting information over the Internet. In this system, messages are then divided into segments referred to as packets. Each packet has obtained a portion of the data and it also contains the address information. These packets are then transmitted on their own through the network, what may follow is that these packets travel a different rout. On the receiving end, the packets are reconstructed to form the basic message that was sent out. This method is efficient because one can have several messages using the same communication lines at the same point in time without being confined to the available resources. It is also rather reliable because if some of the sections of the network, for example, are overloaded or down, the packets can be redirected. Packet switching allows for the timely, decentralized and fault-tolerant communication of the internet, which is why circuit switching is unsuitable for most of the traffic in the internet.
