The synovial fluid is a thick, milky liquid that fills the spaces between the bones of the synovial joints i. e., knee or elbow joints. The roles associated with synovial fluid include smoothing the two articular cartilage surfaces to decrease friction during movement, acting as a lubricant to lessen friction in the articulation of joints, and serving as a shock absorber to stress-induced in the joint by mechanical forces. Furthermore, synovial fluid has the function of delivering substances to, as well as to withdraw products from the articular cartilage since this tissue is avascular. However, it is important to note that the raising of osmotic pressure within the joint cavity is not among the roles of the synovial fluid.
