Which of the following is not a property of water? Group of answer choices

A. ability to adhere to other substances

B. ability to moderate temperatures

C. ability to contract upon freezing

D. ability to dissolve a wide variety of substances

Answer:ability to contract upon freezing

Water shows a number of special physical and chemical characteristics that couldn’t be more crucial for the preservation of life on the planet. From the answer choices given, freezing of water is not a real ability of water molecules.

Water does also express adhesion or the ability to stick to other materials, because its molecule is polar. Also, it has an elevated specific heat capacity which contributes to the fact that it effectively resists the changes in temperatures and smooths out the climate. Also, water possesses superlative dissolving capability of ionic compounds and polar substances.

However, in contrast to most liquids, water does not assume the state of contraction and density when it is freezing. At the contrary, it becomes less dense as a solid than as a liquid and so it extends further. This is because hydrogen bonds forming between molecules of water force them into a state of crystallization with a high degree of volumes. Due to ice expansion which causes it to float on liquid water which is of great importance to aquatic life and serves as a temperature moderator. However, out of the numerous strange and uncommon traits that water has, this is certainly not one of them.
